"Breakfast at Tiffany's" or "Holly & Paul: A Love Story"

Holly Golightly: You know those days when you get the mean reds?
Paul Varjak: The mean reds, you mean like the blues?
Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you're getting fat and maybe it's been raining too long, you're just sad that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?
Paul Varjak: Sure.
Holly Golightly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name!

Unlike Holly, whenever I get a case of the "mean reds" I don't "jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's", I stay in my bed and watch Breakfast at Tiffany's. And, for the days when even the movie won't cure me of the mean reds I've contemplated some of these:
Holly's tub sofa is perfect for laying about and listening to Henry Mancini records. Max McMurdo of Reestore offers a swanky remake:
A fantastic pink party dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy. I don't think that I could ever be depressed with this lovely frock. Unfortunately, it was auctioned off at Christie's for nearly $200,000.
This mask could help me sleep away the mean reds...and too many glasses of scotch. This copy is available for only $34.00 - Patricia FieldThese faux Ray-Ban tortoise shell sunglasses would help to shield the harsh reality that daylight brings - $14.95 ecrater.com. It would also help me tremendously if my little Italian Greyhound, and long time huckelberry friend, Louie, would wear this as he cuddles with me. Although, I think that he'd rather hump the model than wear that Givenchy knock off. And now, strictly for my own personal viewing pleasure, some lovely photos of Holly and Paul.
Yes, at times I can be quite girly -I'm okay with that.

  5. WCGU2- Truer words have never been spoken! Everyone should indeed let their inner Holly Golightly come out from time to time.

  10. What a fantastic posting Scott!

Love this movie and the book too...Holly is really Truman Capote himself—don't you think!

I remember seeing "Breakfast at Tiffany's" at the Castro Theater...everyone cheers loudly when Holly arrives home in the early morning, looking fabulous...and spritzes herself with the perfume stashed in her mailbox!

I might have to watch it this weekend!

  11. Pauly- Paul Varjak's apartment has been a dream of mine since I was a child! This post was originally going to be about his place, but I couldn't manage to get enough photos.

The impeccable Mr. P.- Thank you for sharing your story. I wish, so much, that I was at the Castro Theater right this very second watching the film and cheering with the crowd...

P.S. Did I read correctly in your profile that you do dress windows? What a great job!

  13. Hey do you by any chance know the wallpaper name that is used in Paul "Fred" Varjack's apartment? I think it is fleur de lis but I cannot find a match. Thanks.

  15. i love her- but this is possibly my least favorite of her movies. plus i love HER, and this is the opposite of her in real life.

people who like it just think they have it tough and like to quote "the mean reds" then go buy shit. Italian Greyhound? take a hint from THIS MOVIE since you love it so much, and take in a stray!

also- dreamy yes, but George Peppard's acting was so bad it was hysterical! he was amazing later with the A-team, this was so forced and terrible.

go watch Roman Holiday. or How to Steal a Million.

  16. Wowzers, Andrea- Thanks for the passionate comment. I, too, admire Audrey Hepburn. Of course I know that this role, as a lady escort (Holly Golightly) is the opposite of her in real life. Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of Audrey Hepburn's biography will know that.

Yes, I do have an Italian Greyhound. I don't really know what you're getting at with the snide comment about taking in a stray. I'm a member of PETA and have been vegetarian since I'm 8 years old. I agree that it's important for strays to be adopted, but also feel confident in my accepting a gracious gift from my Mother, who selected my darling little Louie for me. I would like to point out though at this juncture that you are terribly judgmental, and I must also say that you don't wear it well.

I'm not going to try to justify the the film to you. I'm bored just trying to think of a response to your silly comment. And, although I don't reply to all the comments on my modest little blog, you inspired me to respond to yours. Perhaps that was your intention.

Of course I've seen Roman Holiday and How to Steal a Million. Like I said before, I am a great fan of Audrey Hepburn's work, and I don't think that there is anything wrong with appreciating Breakfast at Tiffany's, too.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and for taking the time to comment.
